²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ’s Department of Electrical Engineering (DEE) of the College of Engineering (COE) takes part in an electrification project in Sitio Libandayan, one of the five major sitios in Brgy. Rogongon, Iligan City. Together with the Iligan Light and Power, Inc. (ILPI), Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers - Iligan Bay Chapter (IIEE - IBC), and Iligan Bay Chamber of Industries (IBCI), the problem of limited and a lack of access to stable electricity in the area was addressed.
Beginning in 2018, the project marked a successful completion during a culmination program called “Pulong-Pulong” on January 23, 2026, gathering the key people and beneficiaries of this meaningful endeavor. Dr. Noel R. Estoperez, a faculty member from DEE, shared a message reminiscing about the onset of this project with the tribal leader of the community.
“I can still vividly remember Datu Eduardo Lihayan’s words ten years ago, when he came to us asking for help, expressing his desire for his community ‘nga makabaton ug bisan gamay nga kahayag’,” he said.

Fulfilling its social responsibility, ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ answered the call to help in alleviating the living conditions of the Higaonon people. Dr. Estoperez added that two years after their first encounter with Datu Lihayan, the DOST-funded ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Research Project, entitled ‘Techno-Economic Feasibility Study of Micro-Grid in a Remote Community,’ which ran from December 2017 to December 2019, was completed. Following this was a series of necessary undertakings with ILPI, IEE-IBC, and IBCI, such as site assessments, household surveys, and free house wiring installations.
Barangay Rogongon, considered to be the largest barangay in Iligan, still has parts that are non-powered. ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ, through collaborative projects such as this, continues to empower the underprivileged and apply theoretical knowledge to actual, real-world problems. During the course of the implementation, electrical engineering students also contributed to the initiative under faculty supervision, highlighting the vitality of academe-industry community extension.

In their messages during the culmination program, both Dr. Nancy Q. Echavez, Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs (VCPA) of ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ, and Ms. Casa Belandres, Human Resource Administration Group Manager (HRAG) of ILPI, emphasized the importance of these partnerships for community development. Gearing towards a sustainable future for all, ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ remains at the forefront of helping and assisting communities in need.
